Independent Study Group Assignment Jan 12-19

You may work alone, with a partner, or with a group for any of the activities.

1. Review reading activity #4 with your group:

· Write four summary sentences using sentence frames about what you have learned from the lesson about the placebo effect.

2. Find an article about a medication or treatment that was in the news recently (within the past week or month).

· Decide how placebos and control groups may have been used in the clinical testing.

· Write an experimental design the scientists may have used stating what the placebos and controls may have been.

· Draw a data table the researchers may have used.

3. Read Activity #10 Evaluating Clinical Trials. Complete questions and activities in the packet.

4. What is the FDA? Research on-line for information: History of the FDA and Milestones in the US Food and Drug Law History

Divide important dates up amongst the members of the group by posting notes to each other on my blog. Have each group member concentrate on a particular date or topic. First come/first serve as to what each member of the group will do. Some important things to consider:

· What events led to the beginnings of food and drug regulation?

· What was the FDA originally called?

· What did the book The Jungle by Upton Sinclair have to do with the inception of the FDA?

· Create a presentation about the history of the FDA. Decide as a group what your end product will be: a poster, a timeline, a brochure, power point, or other presentation. Make your presentation neat and attractive.
